WONG QIN KAI

 

Qin Kai is a multi-award winner in competitions, winning top prizes in both the solo and ensemble categories in the National Chinese Music Competition organised by the National Arts Council since 2004.

 

Currently a musician at the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, he is also an active performer both local and abroad, performing the 'Erhu Rhapsody No. 1' by Wang Jian Min in his debut concert with Tsung Yeh and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra in March 2011, the 'Butterfly Lovers Concerto' with the Toa Payoh West CC Chinese Orchestra in June 2011, locally premiering the 'Blue Planet Erhu Concerto' in May 2014. He has also performed in China, South Korea and Russia.

 

Under the tutelage of renowned Erhu musician Mr Zhang Yu Ming, he graduated with a Diploma in Music Performance in 2012, was named the best graduate (music performance) and awarded with the NAFA President’s Award.  In September 2014, he graduated with the Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree First Class from the Nanyang Academy of Music – Royal College of Music (London) and was awarded the prestigious Embassy of Peru Award. Qin Kai is a grateful recipient of various scholarships: the NAC Arts Scholarship (Undergraduate), the Ngee Ann Kongsi Arts Scholarship, the Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship, and the Hokkien Huay Kuan Scholarship. 

 

In July 2012, with strong interest in chamber music, he started the Chinese string quintet StringWerkz. It is his wish to play a part in encouraging chamber music playing in the Chinese music community, developing and establishing a standard group akin to the string quartet of the Western music, and encouraging the development of repertoire representative of Singapore.

 

He believes in contributing to the society and continues to be a guiding force in the local Chinese music community, serving as concert master for the Toa Payoh West Community Club Chinese Orchestra, as well as guest musician in organisations such as the Hsinghai Arts Association Chinese Orchestra.
