SHUNTA GOH
Shunta started learning erhu at the age of 9 under the tutelage of renowned Erhu master Zhang Yu Ming.
In 2002, he participated in the National Chinese Music Competition (NCMC) organized by the National Arts Council, and won 1st prize in the junior Erhu solo and ensemble categories. In 2004, Shunta clinched the second position in the senior Erhu solo category. In 2010, he won 1st prize in the Erhu open category, and made his performance debut with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra with the Erhu Concerto “红梅随想曲” (Red Plum Capriccio), receiving rave reviews. Earlier this year, he also clinched 1st Prize in the NAFA-GTAR Chinese Concerto Competition.
Serving his time in the military as the concertmaster of the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company (SAF MDC) Chinese music ensemble, Shunta has performed for various foreign dignitaries and also in major Chinese opera acts from both local and overseas. He has also amassed experience in fusion rock music as part of the Fusion Electric Band there. He was also the concertmaster and student conductor of Chung Cheng High School (Main) and Raffles Junior College’s Chinese Orchestra during his time.
Recently in 2013, Shunta has represented Singapore as part of the 5 member Singapore delegation for the ASEAN Youth Camp. Shunta has also represented Singapore in 2012 as part of the fusion music ensemble ‘Five Elements’ and performed in the first ever ASEAN Musical Extravaganza held at the Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia organized by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture, Malaysia and was very well received.
Shunta also has shown a passion and flair for orchestral conducting, and has conducted the Toa Payoh West Community Club Chinese Orchestra to full house audiences at the Esplanade Concert Hall and the Singapore Conference Hall. He also serves as the Orchestra’s sectional principal for Erhu.
Shunta believes that ethnic fusion music can play a part in cultivating awareness of the different cultures and music. He hopes to share his musical knowledge and develop the classical Chinese music in Singapore.
